FECAVA has launched a new project and campaign entitled “FECAVA Basic Practices in Endocrinology” with a series of important initiatives set to hit Europe and the global veterinary community in 2023 and 2024 supported by Dechra.
Dr. Hans Kooistra, a European Specialist in Veterinary Internal Medicine from the Netherlands, and Dr. Federico Fracassi from Italy lead the project.
Endocrinology is an ever-evolving field, and the diagnosis and treatment of endocrine diseases can present unique challenges for veterinary professional responsible for communicating with clients about these illnesses that may require lifelong management.
The goal of our project is to encourage and promote improved methods of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of endocrine diseases of dogs and cats. Topics will cover the most common diseases in dogs and cats:
- Hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing’s disease or Cushing’s syndrome),
- Hypoadrenocorticism (Addison’s disease),
- Diabetes in dogs and cats,
- Hypothyroidism in dogs and
- Hyperthyroidism in cats.
The aim is to provide quick reference tools for a step-by-step process to diagnose and treat common endocrine diseases.
Our hope is that veterinarians are able to use this concise resource to remain comfortable with current diagnostic and treatment recommendations for their patients. The guidelines will support clinicians in feeling confident they are providing the most up-to-date care to their patients. Published material can help reduce some of the stress of managing complicated cases and help standardise the approach to taking care of patients with endocrine disease.
The guidelines on hypoadrenocorticism are already available for download on the FECAVA website; others will follow.
